Curators Statement
Practice brings together a community that spans many disciplines, is diverse and questioning, a community ofteachers who continue to practice what they teach. They remain current and driven and enable creative practiceto flourish. To live the life of an artist who is also a researcher and a teacher is to live a life of awareness, a life that permits openness to the complexity around us, a life that intentionally sets out to perceive things differently.Irwin and de Cosson, 2004
The relationship between teaching and practice is vital, both are responsive and creative—they feed each other. However, finding the time to nourish both the teacher and practitioner remains a challenge that eludes many. This exhibition recognises the importance of this relationship and celebrates our teachers who influence, give voice to and support the emerging creative practitioners of tomorrow—the high school students. It is the teacher that enables the student to find their creative voice, to want to follow a career in the arts; in turn it is the practice, that underpins the teaching—a reciprocity exists. Practice celebrates the teachers that are inspired and in turn continue to inspire the next generation, through what they do within and outside of the confines of the classroom wall.
We are reminded just how lucky the students are who have had the privilege of being taught by such dedicated and capable creative minds. We thank the teachers who have participated and acknowledge the following schools for their support:
Albany Senior High School, Carmel College, Elim Christian College, Epsom GirlsGrammar School, Glendowie College, Long Bay College, Macleans College, Marcellin College, Marist College, Onehunga High School, Pinehurst School, Sancta Maria College, St Cuthbert’s College, Tangaroa College, Waitākere College, Western Springs College Ngā Puna o Waiōrea, and Whangārei Girls High School.
